Suspiro/Memória

Suspiro/Memória is an immersive sensory installation that moves with the wind. 1000s of VHS tapes are suspended in the air, creating a black cube floating in
the air. When the wind blows, this solid block disperses and the reflectivity of the VHS tapes make them shimmer in the surrounding light. Being lightweight, you can walk through the installation and push the tapes gently away, creating a sensation as if you are swimming in water. From far away, it can look like a black monolith but the closer you get, the more individual tapes you see, symbolizing how individuality and collectivity.
The idea of using VHS tapes also explains the second part of the title: Memory. The VHS tapes contain countless images (memories) that we cannot see but are there. It is similar to our memory: we don’t see everything but the memories are there. And sometimes we forget them, just like the tapes are blowing in the wind.
The sound of the tapes moving around is similar to tree leaves rustling, making it also a sound experience.
